Sheba’s Coat Improves

Sheba continues to thrive and has become one of the family! She is playing with her toys, running in circles around the living room, and is a bundle of fun! She is trying to stand up on her back legs too! They are stronger, but not that strong yet, soon I think.

We took her to the Dog Beach in Pensacola on Saturday. She wasn’t overly impressed. There were way too many dogs for the small space that is available. While she was well behaved, some of the others were not and she is a little bashful around the more aggressive dogs.

I am attaching a picture…don’t you think she has put on some weight? I am going to take her by the vet today just to put her on the scales! I’ll have more particulars later on.  Kelley

Sheba Is Home At Last

Just wanted to share my joy at these pics from Sheba’s new mom, Kelly!

Sheba New Home
Sheba's New Home

Sheba is looking more like her Giant self daily. A trip to the vet yesterday changed her treatment from yeast infection to staph so now she is on antibiotics and a little more thyroid med.

Isn’t Boris a doll!? He is 11!

(admin note:  Boris is a Miniature Schnauzer. This is a beautiful beard on this guy. I can’t wait to see a picture of Sheba in a few months to see what hers really looks like!)

Sheba Goes HOME!

This is Sheba and her new owner, Kelly (and husband Van). Sheba will live with an 11 yr old Mini Schnauzer. The family lives right near the beach. I feel really good about her new family!

I will send more details but Sheba got into her car unassisted. When Kelly asked her to sit and lay down Sheba laid down.

I have to admit, I still feel like a worried mother sending her child off to camp but we will stay in touch. She has Melissa, who told her about Sheba and has two females that she shows, as a mentor. They share the same vet.

Sheba Update

The last pictures were taken this AM. She remains the best dog ever! Dennis said to tell everyone he will vouch for her! She walks everywhere with him and Cody (his dog) with no leash, comes when called and never leaves his side on their walks! (We live in the country on a dead end road and they are walking through our yards and paths through the woods.)

I have Sheba here at the office and she is a perfect office dog! Follows me around but lies beside me or at the door to my office napping but checking on me often and listening to all that is going on in the building.

I am taking her to my next door neighbor today to see if the dogs get along. This neighbor will help me with her for a week or so.

I have e-mailed two potential families in GA. One is permanent and one is a foster. Also, I am going to take her to several doggie places locally and see if I can find some interest here.

Sheba Off Leash

I have sent e-mails out and will do some more calling around today but have to find someone that can take her at least as a foster soon. I have spent almost $300 on boarding and can’t go any farther with that.

The vet has an account for her and she is on petfinder under Valley of the Sun GS Rescue if anyone has an urge to help her. The vet bill was almost $300 of which I paid $100 so far.

If anyone can help help Ange out financially, that would be great. Even $10-20 helps and adds up. Thank you Ange so much for helping this girl out.

The girls here at the office can’t believe how much her hair has grown in the last few days! She is such a lover and such a lady.

Sheba Update: Take Me Home!

Sheba is looking better each day! Her hair is growing back! You can still see skin most everywhere except her head and parts of her legs. But the good news is there are no fleas and her skin looks much better.

Sheba Gazing Lovingly
Sheba Gazing Lovingly

Her eyes are clear and there are no sign of infection. The yeast infection in her ears is much better. She finished her 8 day minimum prednisone dosage. She is taking soloxine for hypothyroidism but our vet feels she will be able to get off of it eventually. We have to go for more blood work on Oct 1st to see if that still looks like a probability. She is also taking medication for the yeast infection of her skin and ears.

Sheba's New Haircut!
Sheba's New Haircut!

She had diarrhea for several days which is probably due to her medications. We have been feeding her cooked chicken and rice. As of today she has returned to normal so Jackie and Heather have started to add back her regular dog food.

Sheba Wants Cookie!
Sheba Wants Cookie!

She continues to be the sweetest girl you could ask for. Folks at the kennel are very attached to her and she loves it there. It’s not a permanent situation though and tomorrow we will be making calls to start seriously looking for a foster or real home. There is a very good rescue group called STARS that may have a foster home available.

Sheba Sits Real Pretty!
Sheba Sits Real Pretty!

She is great with all animals! She has barked at some people a bit protectively but she wasn’t aggressive about it at all.  Through it all she has been a real lady. She loves cats and is good with children (her family had a 4 year old little girl).  She loves everyone. At the vets she walked in like she had been there a million times and was totally cooperative.

Sheba Loves Getting Petted
Sheba Loves Getting Petted

So this is the dilemma! I picked up Sheba a 7 year old female Giant living in Palm Coast Florida. We are not really sure what happened at this home. It’s a great house, great neighborhood, she had toys, a Coach leather collar. But she also had a terrible flea allergy.

Sheba Meeting The Crew
Sheba Meeting The Crew

Sheba was well cared for until July 2007 and then they just quit taking her to the vet and grooming her. When she got fleas, they put her out on a covered and screened porch. They apparently only let out to “do her business”.

Sheba Has New Freedom!
Sheba Has New Freedom!

We have her allergy under control. Thank goodness she was heartworm negative! She has a secondary yeast infection on her skin and in her ears but is responding to medication. Once we got her bathed and clipped she had so little hair she looked like an alien but it is coming back rapidly now.

We have to board her because we are not set up for another dog. Luger (at 18 months) is way too energetic to be playing with Sheba. She doesn’t have very good muscle mass from her lack of exercise. I am walking her everyday in order to help rebuild some of this muscle back! The ladies at the kennel have bathed and groomed her. They let her out to roam around with them when no one else is around. They all love her but everyone has dogs already.

So, if you know of someone looking for a real sweetheart or would be willing to foster, I would love to explore any possibilities. We have agreed we are looking for just the right home for her. She deserves a better life this time. She is AKC registered but the owner couldn’t find the papers. The owner’s parents bought the dog as a puppy. I am sorry to say that her ears have been butchered to look like a pit-bull ears. But the Giant Schnauzer character is there!  Sheba is officially under the wing of Valley of the Sun Giant Rescue. Sheba is also on Petfinders. I will take care of the kennel bill as it was my choice since I couldn’t easily accommodate her at home.

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Thanks, Ange Wallace

Sheba Update

Sheba is heartworm negative and worm free! She has a very bad yeast infection in her ears, conjunctivitis, flea allergy complicated by dermal yeast infection. She has had her shots. I tried to talk the vet out of it but rabies had to be legal and because she is at the kennel, kennel cough and boosters were necessary.

I got heartworm and Comfortis pills. I have my dog on Comfortis as well because in this area the topicals such as Advantage just are not working. She has medication for the eyes and in a day or so will pick up medication for the yeast infection. She is getting the primrose oil. Her foster mom is also giving her yogurt at each meal. This afternoon she and her assistant were going to bath and clip her. I will go tomorrow and get some pictures. They have knocked $5 a day off her boarding rates for me and is going way out of her way to take special care of our lady.

The vet did some of the work free today but it still came to just over $300 including 6 months of heartworm and Comfortis. I paid $100 and she opened an account for “Sheba”.  They have a fund in the hospital that they use to help with dogs like this. All in all, I think we had a good day.

As to Sheba, she is perfection. Walked like a lady on the leash. Not heeling but not pulling either. She went right into the clinic with no fear at any time. Very calm and friendly to everyone. Very interested in any and all of the other dogs but not pushy. During the exam was extremely cooperative and did not resist a single thing; even ears, eyes and toe nail clipping. She is eating pretty well and the “poop” I was able to walk out of her before the exam was very GS- well formed if a little dry. Lucky people that get her. I think she would be happiest in a fairly quiet family atmosphere with cats, small dogs, or older quiet dogs. She has very little muscle mass but long walks could easily fix that. She just very patiently asks for any and all attention you can give her but is never pushy. To meet her is to love her!

Sheba: Our Newest Rescue Giant!

It will make you cry to see this and see what she used to look like.  But I am sure she will again!  She is as sweet a dog as you could hope to find. Sheba is 7 years old and is looking for a new home. Our great thanks to Ange Wallace for her assistance in rescuing Sheba.

Sheba Leaving For A New Life

My groomer has her now and will be feeding her the IAMs that she usually gets with sweet potato and yogurt in several small portions daily.  I also gave her the primrose oil pills. My groomer is extremely knowledgeable and feels it may well be a thyroid problem. She and her son took right to our little lady.

Sheba The Queen

We will call both her vet and mine tomorrow to make an appointment for her.  Once we have a diagnosis, the groomer will clip her down so we can medicate the skin easily but will try to leave a Giant looking head for her.  She agrees that Sheba (can we change her name along the line?  She deserves a new one!) will make someone a wonderful dog.

Sheba Goes For A Ride!

The owner’s heart is broken, but other than her own home, she couldn’t be in better hands, I promise. She was in a good neighborhood, a good house, and well spoken lady.

Solomon and Ramsi Aug 2009

Both boys have put on weight. They love their raw diet and Solomon is almost as big as Ramsi now. They don’t seem to know how to play, but Ramsi has loosened up enough now that he will roll on the grass for quite awhile.

Every once in awhile they will go on a tear around the yard but for the most part they are pretty content to just patrol the fence around the one acre backyard.

They discovered my apple trees and were confused when the fruit was all gone and they couldn’t snack anymore. Then they found the oranges and quickly learned how to break the skin to get to the sweet stuff.

They really are big sweet boys.

Solomon & Ramsi Update

They are still resting but played pretty hard yesterday morning, it was the first time they have let go and played like puppies together.

Soloman and Ramzi Exploring
Solomon and Ramsi Exploring

They really do sound mean when they have food in their crates and for awhile after they have eaten. I don’t know if they would actually fight over food or not. They are very good about sitting and taking treats next to each other in the yard and when I have dropped one no one has gone for it, for me or for each other while I bend over to pick it up.

Blood tests and superchem came back with real good results. Heartworm tests were both negative. So just the hookworm, which is real time consuming not being able to just let them roam the yard and poop at will but having to be right there to pick it up instantly as one goes one direction and one goes the other.

They are really sweet boys. Ramsi appears to be the larger one and Solomon the smaller, skinnier, weaker one.

They went in for blood work on Monday. On Tuesday I dropped them back to have baths and nail trims. Ramsi (the larger one) had blood in his urine so the vet X-rayed the bladder and kidney area. There were no stones and they said he could have a bruised bladder or a urinary tract infection so he is on clavamox for awhile. He has the beginnings of arthritis in the left hip and a shotgun pellet in his right thigh….???????

All of Solomon’s lumps and bumps were aspirated and determined to be lipomas. The hard bumps on both dogs were determined to be some sort of benign something or other pimple. (ed: Sebaceous cysts?)

Solomon has not been x-rayed yet and he is the one that has the rear end problems a lot like Jackson. He is the really lovable one; he looks up at you with those big brown eyes and leans on you. Ramsi is warming up and if he loses sight of me he comes running back to find me. Ramsi weighed 86 pounds and Solomon weighed 63 pounds.

Soloman & Ramzi
Solomon and Ramsi

I am keeping them away from everyone else until we get the hookworm cleared up. They used a new liquid that you squirt in the mouth one time and then again in 2 weeks. Solomon really liked the stuff and kept licking the tube for more.

Ramsi is already venturing into the pool on the step and onto the bench in the spa area although when he slipped in this morning he still panicked but I made him stay in and moved him over to the step where he knows to come out and he just rested on the step for awhile before coming out. Solomon will put a couple feet in if Ramsi is in.

Soloman or Ramzi?

They both like the food.

These dogs have no teeth!!!! Both upper and lower front teeth are worn down to below gum level. They must have been caged or behind chain link fencing???

Success! Solomon & Ramsi

With huge thanks to Brenda, her husband, Lisa and her staff, Soloman and Ramzi are now safely at Lisa’s kennel. Brenda and her husband picked them up from the VA pound yesterday and drove them down to NC.

These are loving boys who are very attached to each other. They have harsh coats and did get brushed out someyesterday. Their little nubs of tails spent a great deal of time and effort happily wagging away yesterday as they went on their adventure tosafety. They rode well in the car and for the most part didn’t bark at strange dogs from their perch in the back of the car.

solomon-and-ramzi-profiles-small_edited

They are full of energy and have not been trained to walk on a leash but they didn’t beg for food when they stopped for lunch. They are prettythin and need to gain a little bit of weight They give kisses to people and are very watchful of each other. They responded well to commands when they were given.
